Who needs endodontic CBCT
Small-FOV high-resolution CBCT provides three-dimensional anatomical data for endodontic case evaluation. Typical ordering clinicians include:
- Endodontists evaluating complex anatomy before or during root canal treatment
- General dentists managing molar root canal therapy, particularly upper molars
- Dental specialists evaluating treatment failure or retreatment cases
- Oral surgeons planning periapical surgery (apicoectomy) for failed RCT
Clinical use cases
- Hidden canal anatomy (MB2): three-dimensional evaluation of upper molar root canal anatomy, including assessment of the mesiobuccal root for additional canal presence
- Root fracture evaluation: three-dimensional data for assessment of suspected vertical or horizontal root fracture — clinical diagnosis remains with the referring endodontist
- Periapical lesion assessment: size, extent, and relationship of periapical radiolucencies to adjacent structures
- Root resorption: internal or external resorption assessment, including extent and location
- Pre-surgical apicoectomy planning: root tip position, cortical plate, and adjacent anatomy for periapical surgery planning
Why mobile CBCT is better for endodontic cases
- Same-visit imaging: the patient consults and gets scanned in one appointment — no referral interruption for an endodontic case that may need same-day or next-day treatment
- High resolution in a small field: the 5×5 cm FOV mode is optimized for single-tooth or single-quadrant evaluation, providing the resolution appropriate for canal anatomy and fracture evaluation
- Rapid DICOM delivery: DICOM in 15 minutes means the referring endodontist can evaluate the scan before the patient leaves the building
- Low dose: approximately 50 µSv or less at small FOV — appropriate for endodontic indication imaging depending on clinical protocol

Base scan: $289 per visit (includes DICOM, encrypted Google Drive delivery, free 30-minute screen-share walkthrough in RadiAnt or your viewer of choice). First-scan promotional rate of $145 may be available — ask at booking.
All imaging requires a prescription from a licensed dentist or physician. Clinical interpretation of imaging data, including root fracture diagnosis and treatment planning, is the responsibility of the referring clinician. CBCT findings may vary depending on scan protocol, FOV selection, and clinical context.
[ FAQ · ENDODONTIC CBCT ]
Common questions about endodontic CBCT.
- What FOV mode is used for endodontic CBCT?
- Endodontic cases typically use the Teeth mode (approximately 5x5 cm field of view) on the PreXion3D Explorer EX, which provides high spatial resolution appropriate for single-tooth or single-quadrant evaluation. The referring clinician specifies the FOV based on clinical need.
- Can a CBCT detect a vertical root fracture?
- CBCT can provide three-dimensional data that may reveal findings consistent with vertical root fracture, such as a periradicular halo pattern or bony defect. However, root fracture diagnosis is a clinical determination made by the referring endodontist interpreting the imaging data in the context of the full clinical picture. Not all fractures are visible on CBCT.
- Is endodontic CBCT appropriate for identifying the MB2 canal?
- Yes. Small-FOV high-resolution CBCT is a recognized diagnostic aid for evaluating upper molar root canal anatomy, including assessment of whether an MB2 canal may be present. The imaging provides anatomical data; the clinical significance and treatment decisions remain with the referring endodontist.
- What is the dose for a small-FOV endodontic CBCT?
- A small-FOV (5x5 cm) CBCT with the PreXion3D Explorer EX delivers approximately 50 µSv or less, depending on the scan mode and protocol selected. This is roughly one-eighth of a chest X-ray. Pediatric protocols are available for appropriate patients on referral.
