Who needs a TMJ CBCT scan
TMJ CBCT provides three-dimensional osseous anatomy data for clinicians evaluating the temporomandibular joint. Typical ordering clinicians include:
- TMD specialists and orofacial pain practitioners
- Oral and maxillofacial surgeons evaluating condylar pathology or planning surgery
- Orthodontists requiring baseline or post-treatment joint anatomy data
- Prosthodontists managing occlusal rehabilitation in patients with joint symptoms
- General dentists with patients presenting TMJ-related symptoms requiring imaging referral
Clinical use cases
- Bilateral condyle morphology: size, shape, and symmetry of the mandibular condyles; assessment of condylar flattening, erosion, or osteophyte formation
- Condyle-fossa relationship: joint space evaluation in the coronal, sagittal, and axial planes
- Degenerative joint changes: osseous signs of degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis) at the condyle and articular eminence
- Pre-surgical condylar anatomy: three-dimensional anatomy for oral surgery planning involving the condyle or ramus
Important limitation — soft tissue and disc
CBCT is a bone-only imaging modality. The articular disc, retrodiscal tissue, and synovial membrane are not visible on CBCT. If disc displacement, disc perforation, or synovial pathology is the primary clinical question, MRI is the appropriate modality. The referring clinician determines which imaging study or combination of studies is indicated based on the clinical presentation.
Why mobile CBCT is practical for TMJ evaluation
- No hospital or radiology center referral: bilateral TMJ bone anatomy is captured at your practice — eliminating the referral gap and keeping the clinical relationship intact
- Rapid DICOM delivery: DICOM in 15 minutes allows same-visit review with the patient and same-day treatment planning initiation
- Low dose: approximately 50 µSv — significantly lower than hospital CT and appropriate for osseous TMJ evaluation depending on clinical protocol
- Bilateral capture in one scan: both condyles are imaged in a single acquisition — no separate bilateral appointments required

All imaging requires a prescription from a licensed dentist or physician. CBCT is a bone-only modality; soft tissue structures including the articular disc are not assessed. Clinical diagnosis of TMD and treatment planning decisions are the responsibility of the referring clinician. Imaging findings may vary depending on scan protocol and clinical context. MRI is recommended for articular disc evaluation.
[ FAQ · TMJ CBCT SCAN ]
Common questions about TMJ CBCT.
- What does a TMJ CBCT scan show?
- A TMJ CBCT scan provides three-dimensional bone-only imaging of the temporomandibular joint. It shows bilateral mandibular condyle morphology, condyle-fossa relationship and joint space, and osseous degenerative changes such as flattening, erosion, or osteophyte formation. CBCT does not image soft tissue — the articular disc is not visible. MRI is the appropriate modality for disc displacement evaluation.
- Can CBCT diagnose TMD or disc displacement?
- CBCT provides anatomical bone data that contributes to TMD evaluation. Clinical diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders, including disc displacement, is made by the referring clinician based on CBCT findings, clinical examination, symptoms, and, where indicated, MRI for disc assessment. MyNavi Scan provides imaging data only.
- When should a clinician recommend MRI instead of or in addition to CBCT for TMJ?
- MRI is the appropriate modality when articular disc displacement, disc perforation, or synovial inflammation is the primary clinical question. CBCT is appropriate when osseous anatomy, condyle morphology, joint space, or degenerative bony changes are the primary question. The decision of which modality to order — and whether both are indicated — is made by the referring clinician.
- Which specialists typically order TMJ CBCT through MyNavi Scan?
- TMD specialists, orofacial pain practitioners, oral surgeons evaluating condylar pathology, orthodontists requiring joint anatomy data for treatment planning, and prosthodontists managing full-arch occlusal rehabilitation are the primary ordering clinicians for TMJ CBCT.
- Is a bilateral TMJ scan included in the base price?
- Yes — a single CBCT acquisition in the appropriate face or arch mode captures bilateral TMJ anatomy. Both condyles are imaged in one scan. Confirm the scan mode and protocol at booking based on the referring clinician's clinical requirements.
