[ FAQ · SINUS CBCT SCAN ]

Common questions about sinus CBCT.

Which sinuses does a CBCT scan cover?
The PreXion3D Explorer EX Face mode covers the maxillary sinuses (bilateral), anterior and posterior ethmoid air cells, sphenoid sinus, and frontal sinuses — providing a complete paranasal sinus survey. The ostiomeatal complex anatomy is also visible. The specific anatomy captured depends on the FOV mode selected by the referring clinician.
Can a CBCT be used to plan a sinus lift before implant placement?
Yes. Sinus floor height (residual bone between the alveolar crest and the sinus floor), sinus width, mucosal thickness, and presence of septa are all assessable on CBCT — data that informs lateral window or crestal approach sinus lift planning. The clinical decision of whether and how to perform the procedure is made by the referring surgeon.
Is CBCT sufficient for ENT FESS pre-operative planning?
CBCT can provide anatomical data including ostiomeatal complex, sinus morphology, and mucosal thickening that may be useful in ENT pre-operative planning. However, the appropriateness of CBCT versus hospital CT for any specific ENT case is determined by the referring ENT specialist. CBCT spatial resolution and soft tissue contrast differ from hospital CT and the clinical relevance of those differences depends on the case.
What sinus findings can a CBCT identify?
CBCT can identify mucosal thickening, air-fluid levels, sinus opacification, mucosal retention cysts, polyp-like changes, and anatomical variants such as Haller cells, concha bullosa, or deviated nasal septum. Clinical interpretation of these findings and their significance is the responsibility of the referring clinician.
What is the dose for a paranasal sinus CBCT?
The PreXion3D Explorer EX Face mode delivers approximately 50 µSv — roughly one-eighth of a chest X-ray and approximately 30 to 60 times lower than a hospital CT, depending on the clinical protocol and FOV selected. This dose is substantially lower than conventional CT while providing sufficient resolution for dental and ENT pre-operative planning in most cases.
